Last month, during a morning patrol, ACK’s Field Officer Sammy witnessed a young Grevy's zebra foal running amongst a group of donkeys being chased by a domestic dog. Recognizing the immediate risk to the animal, Sammy mobilized nearby community members to intervene.

Together, they successfully rescued the foal from the dog and temporarily kept it safe alongside the donkeys while efforts were made to locate its mother. The mother zebra was located mid -afternoon, and the foal was reunited with her. Grevy’s zebras are the largest and most endangered species of zebra, known for their narrow stripes and white bellies. Fewer than 3,000 remain in the wild, primarily in Kenya and Ethiopia, where they face threats from habitat loss, drought, and competition with livestock.
This incident highlights the importance of rapid response, community collaboration, and vigilance in preventing wildlife distress and human-wildlife conflict while saving endangered species.
Kudos Sammy!!
