Conflict Perceptions

mrt 12, 2018

As human population increases and wildlife are confined to protected areas the issue of wildlife corridors is a tricky subject. The Ulu Conservancy is located on the northern edge of the Salama study area. It is home to several species that are perceived by people as a threat to their lives and livelihoods. Recently, six buffalo dispersed from the growing herd and were spotted in Aimi kwa Malungu. The animals were unfortunately surrounded by an irate crowd that left one dead and another injured. One person was also injured in the attempt to kill the buffalo before our field staff in Salama worked closely with wildlife authorities and county officials to contain the crowd and ensure safety for both the bovines and people. The remaining four buffaloes made their way back safely in a nearby conservancy.
